Royal Connection: Honoring Afro-Caribbean Heritage Through Art, Culture, and Cuisine

Twelve African monarchs visited Limón to strengthen cultural ties and recognize the region’s unique legacy—highlighting GigiO and Le Cameleon as cultural spaces of connection.

This past June, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca became the vibrant setting for a historic moment: the visit of twelve representatives of African royalty who traveled to Costa Rica’s Caribbean region to deepen cultural connections and celebrate the legacy of Afro-descendant communities.

The royal delegation held various meetings and cultural encounters throughout the province of Limón, including activities with local leaders, Indigenous groups, and artists. One of the most meaningful gatherings took place at GigiO, the art-centered restaurant owned by Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel, where guests explored themes such as ancestral territory, cultural preservation, justice, and unity.

At GigiO, art and expression are at the heart of the experience. This unique space fuses contemporary design, local creativity, and Caribbean culinary tradition, hosting exhibitions and cultural events that reflect the richness and resilience of the region. It was a natural setting for dialogue between African royalty and local communities—celebrating shared history and future collaboration.

Le Cameleon and GigiO are proud to be part of a destination that is gaining recognition not only for its natural beauty, but also for its profound Afro-Caribbean identity. The visit of twelve African kings and queens to Puerto Viejo is a powerful reminder that this corner of Costa Rica holds global cultural significance.
